This review is from: Nikon D5100 16.2 MP Digital SLR Camera & 18-55mm G VR DX AF-S Zoom Lens with 55-200mm Lens + 32GB Card + Case + (2) Filters + Remote + Tripod + Cleaning Kit (Electronics) I loved the D5100 (thats the 2 stars), but except for that its a bad bad deal. The good part first, remote works great, good case and no problems with the SD card. For the disappointing part, the 55-200mm is a non VR, so at higher focal lengths there is a shake, can only be used with a tripod. Both filters are UV filters, which I learned later had no use expecpt to protect the lens. The tripod feels like its too fragile, and the camera locking mechanism not quick and easy. Camera adjustment is also a cumbersome process. I would recommend buying the camera separately and investing in better quality lenses and tripod. There are much more thorough reviews on Amazon for people who are already serious photographers. General Impression: Wonderful camera - gives you control of parameters (such as f/stop, ISO, shutter speed) when you want to play with them or get creative and will auto-select them when you just want to take pictures. This was important to me as I am still learning to adjust them to my liking but don't want to miss out on pictures because I'm fumbling around with buttons. It does not contain image stabilizing "vibration reduction" technology. This is good from the price standpoint, but may surprise someone that thinks this is a kit Nikon put together. The result is you must use a tripod that would not be required for a current-design lens. I take mostly pictures of people at events and many of my baby son without flash in low light situations. I had been using a Nikon D40x for 1 year and very early reached my limitation with that camera. The Nikon D40x has very nice image quality, but the camera's interface is not suited for a more serious shooter who wants quick single button or dial access to such shooting parameters such as white balance, shooting mode, metering mode, etc. I also felt very limited by the D40x not having an in-body focus motor that would allow me to use non AF-I/AF-S lenses (which are lenses without the focus motor built-in). The Nikon D40x limitations were severe enough that I was about to consider purchasing a Canon 40D until the Nikon D90 appeared just in time. PROS: 1. It takes wonderful pictures and he has just scratched the surface of all it can do. The video works well but uses up a lot of memory. The additional items in the package made this a great buy. However, MY mistake was I thought the 70-300mm lens was also a VR but it was not. I didn't read carefully so was surprised when I received my order. The metal portion of this finder with the prongs had slightly worn a tiny bit of the top edge of the glass LCD so I decided to look into the Seagull version. The fitting of the Seagull version is plastic so it should not damage glass at all. I also heard the fit was tighter, which I hoped would be safer after I accidentally popped my Canon one off the camera quite easily a few times. I actually received the newer model of the Seagull that goes up to 2.5 in magnification (there is actually an even newer one providing 3x magnification). The adapters were supposed to be made from a better quality of nylon than the previous versions. Here's my findings: 1. Quality: The Canon is definitely a higher quality item and it has a heavier feel. The Seagull is much lighter. They both are mainly plastic with a metal barrel that is rotated for focusing. After searching and only finding older right angle finders for much older Pentax models I stumbled on this beauty. The finder is well constructed; light in weight but does not feel flimsy. Probably most appealing feature for everyone looking at this product is that it appears to be compatible with almost all SLRs, regardless of brand. Adapters allow one to attach the finder to a particular brand of camera. The fit on my Pentax was snug but not so tight that I couldn't take it off without excessive force. Though I have not made much use of the 2x magnification, I believe it would be very helpful in macro work. The only drawback to this finder is the rather loose feel to the diopter control. The only reason that I gave it four, rather than five, stars is that the fit is a littl too tight (although this is better than too loose). I might be able to improve this with a few adjustments, however. The viewfinder is useful for nature photography when using a tripod, especially when the camera lens is pointing upward.
