Without qualification, the Nikon D300 is a superb camera. So many superlatives have been used with the D300 that I will not repeat them here. All the superlatives used with the D300 applies equally well to the D700. I will add however that as good as the superlatives may have been with the D300, the D700 deserves a bit more. Let me explain. The Nikon D700 is equipped with a full frame FX sensor (36.00mm x 23.90mm). This is the same sensor used by the Nikon D3. Nikon D3 12.1MP FX Digital SLR Camera (Body Only) The D300 on the other hand uses the APS-C sensor (23.60mm x 15.80mm). Both the D700 and the D300 have about the same 12 megapixel rating (with the D300 actually slightly higher)... I am not going to go over the specs because you can read about them on just about any camera web site. What I am going to concentrate on is who should buy one and why. First off, I've read about many folks lamenting having bought the D300 and now feel like the need to "upgrade" to a D700. These are two different cameras for two different purposes and as such don't compete against each other so much as complement each other. The D300 doesn't have the low noise capability (The D700 can get clean images at ISO1600 vice ISO400 for the D300) nor does it have the wide angle capabilities of the D700. The D700 doesn't have the 1.5x multiplier of the D300 so wide angle lenses are truly wide. Additionally, while you can use DX lenses on the D700, you will only be using 5 mp of your sensor. Another comparison is between the D3 and D700. They both have the same sensor so the image and ISO abilities are the same. The D700 comes slower out of... I started wtih a Fuji S2, moved up to the Nikon D2H (horrible reliability, expensive), D2Hs, D200, D300 and finally the D700. With every camera prior to the D700 there were compromises and Nikon was always two years behind Canon. Finally, when the D3 came out, they were in the lead again, but the price was too much for my semi-pro use to justify. So I struggled along with a pair of D300s for another eight months. The D300 is an excellent camera, however, it has some serious flaws: It overexposes and is particularly hot on the red channel. It's higher ISO performance is mediocre and really kills detail. And it's DX. I bought a D700 for $2950 and, predictably, the price fell $200 a few days after that. But I needed it for an assignment that would involve shooting in a dimly light garage. The camera worked perfectly, although once again, I am seeing overexposure in some scenes. The auto WB is much improved... The Konica Minolta Maxxum 5D is as good (or better) than all the others in its class (e.g, Nikon and Canon) but comes with the anti-shake feature. It is also among the least expensive in its class. Get it while you still can. This camera is for experienced digital photography enthusiasts, or technological savvy folks who are sure that's where they are headed. You can set it to "auto" and point-and-shoot the Maxxum 5D (also know as Dynax 5D internationally) and you'll get perfect shots nearly all the time. But if that's all you want to do, this camera is not for you. By the way, it would be foolish to buy this (or any other DSLR) camera as a starter camera (even if you have the money). Not only does this camera have many of the features that the 7D (an outstanding camera) has (like the anti-shake, which works wonders in low light), but it is also much more affordable, and perfect for the photographer who wants to capture family photos, stunning vacation photos, or beautiful RAW format images to be blown up to over 11X14. I have been playing around with this camera for the past few weeks. I have a SanDisk Compact Flash Ultra II 1 gb card with it, and it will hold around 50 RAW format images or 160 FINE format images, which are perfect for capturing photos that you don't plan to blow up past 8X10. Every single photograph I have taken so far has come out crisp and beautiful. The colors are exact and the warmth of the tones is perfect. It has excellent ergonomics, great features (like antishake), and of course, produces high quality images. I moved up from a Canon point and shoot and I really appreciate these features: 1) no shutter lag, 2) long battery life, 3) great low-light performance, 4) interchangeable lenses, 5) RAW format support. I am shooting only RAW these days and using Photoshop Elements 3.0 to do the conversion to JPEG. While it is true the camera will usually do a good job, with RAW you have a good chance to fix that important picture where the exposure and white balance is just wrong. On the lens front I'm using: 1) 18-70mm kit lens (wide but inexpensive), 2) Minolta AF 50mm f/1.7 lens - great for portaits and low-light 3) Tamron 28-200mm XR - a good all-around and compact lens. I look forward to many years of usage from this camera. I certainly hope Sony picks up support for the Minolta... You get most of the best parts of the D7000 for 1/3 cheaper. If you are looking for a starter camera or a back up body to the D7000 this is it. Here are the major differences between the D5100 and D7000. D5100 Exact same sensor and processing abilities as the D7000. Some of the best Image Quality available in any DSLR. ISO 3200 is very usable with low noise. - Swivel screen while the D7000 is fixed -- Since the contrast autofocus (ie Live View) is not very good on either of these cameras this is not really a player unless you are using a tripod. Then the swivel screen is very useful. - 4 fps vs 6 fps for D7000 - No big deal 4 fps is plenty fast to fill your card with similar looking pictures. Also, in RAW D7000 buffers out pretty fast and then slows down anyway. - 11 focus points vs 39 for D7000 - Most of the time not really a big deal. Sometimes all those extra points get in the...
