5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous, June 14, 2011

This review is from: Nikon D5100 16.2 MP Digital SLR Camera & 18-55mm G VR DX AF-S Zoom Lens with 55-300mm VR Lens + 16GB Card + Backpack + (2) Filters + Cleaning & Accessory Kit (Electronics)
I absolutely love this kit!!! First, the body of the camera is awesome, the display opens ups and it has 360 feature that's amazing, it takes video and has a lot of effects that you can choose from, both the 18-55 and 55-300 are VR (vibration resistant) lenses, which is even better! We take wild life photos and this lens makes a huge difference when it comes to clarity. The kit comes with two filter one for each lens, which I cannot emphasize how great filter are. A big memory card (which you will def need if you choose the size of your photos as large), the cleaning cloth that you can hang (very handy), an actual cleaning kit and the backpack. The backpack is good, I like that on the bottom part I am able to carry the camera with the 55-300 lens on, the body of my Nikon d40x and one small lens on each side of the camera with the lens, it also features a cloth that will technically will go over the display in case that the camera didn't have a "mobile" display. The top part you are... Read more

3.0 out of 5 stars I wanted to like this camera, July 17, 2011

I really wanted to like this camera and lens combination. The lenses are the AFS 18-55mm G VR DX AF-S Zoom Lens and AFS 55-300mm VR Lens. This cameral has a large sensor (same as the D7000) which improves light gathering and provides the potential for exceptional detail. Further it has a huge number of settings making it very versatile. One of the banes of digital cameras has been their lack of dynamic range--the ability to show detail in both shadow and light without blowing out the highlights. The second bane has been noise (speckles) that appear in low light situations. I had been waiting for a camera that tackled both of these issues successfully. And the D5100 did that with varying success.
The low light capability is very good. I produced photos at ISO 3200 without the noise I have had with other cameras at ISO 400--a tremendous improvement. The dynamic range is also better but not a quantum leap unless using the High Dynamic Range mode. But getting to HDR mode means... Read more

This review is aimed at people who are new to photography, as I am in the same boat. There are much more thorough reviews on Amazon for people who are already serious photographers.

General Impression:
Wonderful camera - gives you control of parameters (such as f/stop, ISO, shutter speed) when you want to play with them or get creative and will auto-select them when you just want to take pictures. This was important to me as I am still learning to adjust them to my liking but don't want to miss out on pictures because I'm fumbling around with buttons.

Construction/Feel:
After going to Best Buy to physically hold the Canon T3i and Nikon d5100, I immediately decided on the Nikon. It felt much better in my hands and just looked better in general. Both were fairly light which is nice but also means they are made from quite a bit of plastic - not a problem though as this keeps the price down and I don't drop things.

Controls:
I have been... Read more
